I spent May Term in New York City for a NYC Contemporary Art World Class. Each student was to research an artist, institution, curator or gallery, and within the two weeks we were in the city, we would go to the institution or space and collectively ask questions or receive a studio visit. The first week of our class was spent in Pennsylvania at Mildred’s Lane, performing an intensive collaboration with each other, and also getting to know each other quite well. Our strengths, weaknesses, when we were angry, upset, happy or sad. Getting back into the city proved to be a big change from the vast country side. Personal space was a commodity, which we learned very quickly. Communication also proved to be difficult. Eye contact is a seldom utilized trait in human beings. This piece is a reaction to all of these circumstances. I asked the students in my class to place the spoons in their mouths and stand with hands at their sides silently. The shape of the object is like a chandelier. I was thinking a lot about the anthropological significance of objects, as well as placing the human in the space, making them the object. I had also been to the MOMA to see the Marina Abramovic reperformances as well as “The Artist is Present.” To look someone in the eye is a true connection. The mouth is also an intimate connection, and not necessarily to kiss, but to be connected by words or breath. The object soon after the performed action, became a remnant of what had occurred.
